UK Familiarisation Training

Is driving ‘on the left’ proving a challenge for colleagues visiting from overseas?

This short, intensive course is designed to help business visitors gain the confidence and competence they need to drive safely and securely, while here in the UK. By contributing to their overall efficiency and effectiveness, greater confidence on the road can also help to ensure participants not only enjoy their visit to the UK, but also become more productive team members during their stay.

Benefits to your organisation:

  • builds driver confidence
  • increases road awareness
  • promotes safer positive driving
  • helps colleagues visiting from overseas play a more effective and productive role
  • helps them enjoy their driving and make more of their stay
  • demonstrates concern for your staff’s well-being

Enabling visiting colleagues to go about their work more efficiently, effectively and safely

The IAM Fleet UK Familiarisation training course has been developed specifically to help overseas visitors required to drive a car while working in the UK to gain greater confidence in their ability to drive on our congested roads and awareness of the appropriate safety issues. All relevant areas – including ‘rules of the road’ and ‘driving on the left’ – are expertly and patiently addressed, giving visiting drivers all the information and skills they’ll need to go about their business safely and purposefully, and enjoy driving here in the UK.

How much time does it take?

Two courses are available – half-day and full-day.

Half-day. The half day course is ideal for drivers who have some experience of driving in the UK, but are eager to improve their confidence and skills; are, perhaps, changing to a different type of vehicle, or simply want a ‘refresher’. The course consists of on-road awareness training and realistic manoeuvring exercises.

Full-day. On the full day course, participants have more opportunity to hone their driving skills and increase their awareness of the road environment.

Both courses offer a one-to-one, trainer/driver ratio. However, one additional colleague may share and participate in the training session at no extra cost.

Whose vehicle – and where does training take place?

Conducted in the participant’s own vehicle, training can usually be held at any UK location, by arrangement, and is delivered by a fully qualified IAM Fleet advanced driver trainer.

Please note: all vehicles used for training must be fully insured and include cover for any additional driver that participants invite to share their session.

Who is this course designed for?

Overseas staff, currently working in the UK, who have little or no UK driving experience, and wish to improve or develop their confidence and competence in driving ‘on the left’. They must have a legal entitlement to drive in the UK.

UK Familiarisation – course content

The two courses cover the same key elements, although the full-day course will place greater emphasis on developing advanced driving techniques for enhanced safety and enjoyment.

  • How to be sure you are legal
  • How to plan the best route
  • Understanding hazards and driver behaviour: reading the road
  • Driver awareness: concentration, observation, anticipation, and the creation of space and time
  • Driving ‘defensively’
  • Vehicle maintenance/preparation
